A Nashville single for American listeners
Junior’s Farm and Sally G came out of Wings’ 1974 stay in Tennessee. The band worked at Nashville’s Sound Shop with engineer Ernie Winfrey, recording during a summer visit which also included rehearsals and time away from London.
The single’s title was connected with the farm owned by songwriter Curly Putman Jr, where McCartney and his entourage stayed. Nashville supplied both the setting for the visit and the studio environment in which the two songs took shape.
Junior’s Farm was released as a standalone single. It continued Wings’ success after Band On The Run while presenting a refreshed band, with McCulloch’s lead guitar and Britton’s drumming added to the core trio.
Our Junior’s Farm recording article follows the summer studio story. The November entry marks its release in the United States.
The five-piece Wings line-up
The band on Junior’s Farm comprised Paul McCartney on lead vocals and bass, Linda McCartney on keyboards and backing vocals, Denny Laine on guitar and backing vocals, Jimmy McCulloch on lead guitar and backing vocals, and Geoff Britton on drums.
McCulloch’s guitar is a prominent feature of the recording, with Paul’s call of “Take me down, Jimmy” leading into his solo. The performance gave the new guitarist a conspicuous role on a major Wings release.
Britton’s drumming likewise places the record within a specific stage of the band’s development. Together, the five musicians represent Wings between the three-piece Band On The Run recordings and the personnel changes surrounding Venus And Mars.
| Musician | Role |
|---|---|
| Paul McCartney | Lead vocals and bass |
| Linda McCartney | Keyboards and backing vocals |
| Denny Laine | Guitar and backing vocals |
| Jimmy McCulloch | Lead guitar and backing vocals |
| Geoff Britton | Drums |
Sally G: the B-side’s country-chart life
Sally G offered a contrasting side of the Nashville visit. Its country arrangement sat on the reverse of the rock A-side, giving listeners two distinct performances on the same single.
McCartney wrote Sally G after visiting a country-music club in Nashville’s Printer’s Alley. The recording drew on the city’s musical setting and included Nashville session musicians alongside Wings.
The song received promotion beyond its role as the B-side. It reached number 51 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart and number 11 on Canada’s RPM Country Tracks chart.
Those country placings belong to Sally G. The US pop-chart figures most closely associated with the single are Junior’s Farm’s number-three Billboard showing and number-four Cash Box peak.
The American chart performance
| Recording | Chart | Peak |
|---|---|---|
| Junior’s Farm | US Billboard Hot 100 | 3 |
| Junior’s Farm | US Cash Box Top 100 | 4 |
| Sally G | US Billboard Hot Country Singles | 51 |
| Sally G | Canadian RPM Country Tracks | 11 |
| Junior’s Farm | UK Singles Chart | 16 |
The American result was stronger than the record’s British chart performance. In the UK, Junior’s Farm reached number 16. In the United States, the Billboard peak carried the record into the top three in early 1975.
Billboard’s later chart history identifies Junior’s Farm / Sally G at number three on 11 January 1975. The chart peak therefore followed the November release by more than two months.
The UK and US releases
The British single appeared on 25 October 1974 as Apple R 5999. American release followed on 4 November as Apple 1875, with Junior’s Farm and Sally G retaining their A-side and B-side pairing.

A standalone record between albums
Junior’s Farm was a non-album single at the time of release. Its place in Wings’ history falls after Band On The Run and before Venus And Mars.
Later compilations gave the song a continuing album presence. It appeared on Wings Greatest, Wingspan: Hits and History and Pure McCartney, bringing the single to listeners through collections spanning different periods of McCartney’s career.
The original pairing remains distinctive: a rock A-side featuring the new Wings guitar-and-drums partnership, backed with a country song shaped by the same Nashville visit.
