George Harrison and Brian Epstein Fly to Hamburg

Thursday 12 April 1962 | Travel, The Beatles

On 12 April 1962, George Harrison and The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein arrived in Hamburg, Germany, ahead of the group’s first residency at the Star-Club.

The rest of The Beatles — John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Pete Best — had travelled to Hamburg the previous day, 11 April 1962. Harrison’s delayed journey was due to illness.

Arrival in Hamburg

Upon arrival, Harrison and Epstein joined the band in a city that had already played a defining role in their development. Unlike earlier trips, Epstein’s presence signalled tighter organisation and increasing ambition, as he began overseeing the group’s international engagements more directly.

The group were met with the devastating news that Stuart Sutcliffe, The Beatles’ former bassist and close friend, had died of a brain haemorrhage on 10 April 1962.

Star-Club Residency

The engagement at the Star-Club on Hamburg’s Grosse Freiheit began on 13 April 1962 and ran until 31 May 1962, comprising a seven-week, 48-night residency.

The venue quickly became one of Hamburg’s premier rock and roll locations, and The Beatles were among its earliest headline attractions.
