3 November 1967 · Film and television · Magical Mystery Tour

On Friday 3 November 1967, The Beatles completed filming for Magical Mystery Tour with additional scenes for Blue Jay Way at Sunny Heights, Ringo Starr’s home in Weybridge, Surrey. The new footage included the four Beatles pretending to play a white cello, a game of football in the garden, fireworks and indoor projection sequences involving Mal Evans.

The shoot supplemented footage made at West Malling in September. By November, a cello had been added to George Harrison’s recording of Blue Jay Way, providing a new visual element for the film. Sunny Heights supplied both a garden setting and indoor space for the final inserts.

Why The Beatles returned to Blue Jay Way

The Blue Jay Way sequence was not filmed entirely on 3 November. Its earlier material had been shot during the September production at West Malling airfield in Kent, including Harrison’s performance filmed on 21 September. That footage formed the basis of the musical sequence before the group gathered at Sunny Heights.

The recording had also developed in stages. The Beatles began Blue Jay Way on 6 September 1967, added vocal overdubs the following day and returned to it on 6 October. At that October session, cellist Peter Willison added the cello part, while Starr played tambourine.

The cello therefore entered the recording after the September filming. On 3 November, the group made additional images incorporating the instrument. These were filmed performances for the camera, not a new studio recording of the song or evidence that the Beatles themselves played its recorded cello part.

The white cello in Ringo’s garden

The Beatles took turns pretending to play a white cello in the garden rockery. The instrument was passed between band members rather than being assigned to one permanent on-screen cellist. During Lennon’s turn, the other Beatles entered the scene fooling around with a football.

The supplied photograph shows Lennon in a black hat and dark, decorated jacket beside the white instrument, with a large flower prop in front of him. The cello was a conspicuous visual feature of the shoot, appearing both with the group and on its own.

The distinction between the prop and the soundtrack is straightforward: Willison performed the recorded cello overdub at EMI, while Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr mimed with the white instrument for the film. The November shoot added pictures to an existing musical performance.

Football on the lawn

The band was also filmed playing football in Starr’s back garden. The photographs show a white ball with red circular markings, autumn leaves scattered across the grass and the Beatles moving between the lawn and the garden’s trees and shrubs.

These scenes placed the group together in an informal outdoor setting, alongside the more deliberately staged cello material. The football was also worked into the action around Lennon’s turn with the instrument, connecting the garden activity with the musical sequence.

Harrison was filmed running down garden steps, and children were filmed playing nearby. The garden shoot also included the unattended cello with fireworks burning behind it. The filming date fell just before Bonfire Night, but the fireworks belonged to the planned images for the sequence rather than a filmed concert performance.

Mal Evans and the indoor projections

Filming continued inside Sunny Heights. Mal Evans stood bare-chested while the earlier West Malling Blue Jay Way footage was projected onto him. His body became a surface for the moving images, allowing previously filmed material to be photographed again in a new setting.

The Beatles were also filmed watching Blue Jay Way on a screen. Lennon watched while moving on a rocking horse belonging to Starr’s young son Zak. The indoor material brought the band’s domestic surroundings into the production, while the projected West Malling images connected the new shoot directly with the September footage.

These were additional film elements rather than scenes of the Beatles recording the music. The song’s sound had been created at EMI Studios; the cameras at Sunny Heights were collecting images to be assembled into its screen sequence.

Sunny Heights: a home used as a filming location

Sunny Heights stood on South Road in the St George’s Hill estate at Weybridge. Starr and Maureen had bought the house in July 1965 and were living there when the November 1967 filming took place.

The location was already part of the band’s Surrey home life, rather than a studio hired specially for the production. Its garden provided the lawn, rockery and steps used for the exterior footage, while the house accommodated the projection scenes.

For another view of the same home earlier that year, see Ringo Starr outside Sunny Heights on 7 January 1967. The November shoot was a separate event, using the property as a working location for Magical Mystery Tour.

From a Los Angeles song to a Surrey film shoot

The title Blue Jay Way came from a street in the Hollywood Hills where Harrison stayed during his August 1967 visit to California. He began the song while waiting for music publicist Derek Taylor to find the house through the fog, with Harrison struggling to stay awake after his flight.

Its recording was made in London, its first film material in Kent and its final inserts in Surrey. The garden at Sunny Heights was therefore a filming location for the song, not the Los Angeles address described in its lyrics.

That Californian visit also included Harrison’s attendance at Ravi Shankar’s Hollywood Bowl concert on 4 August and his visit to Haight-Ashbury on 7 August. Those events belong to the background of the song’s composition, several weeks before the Magical Mystery Tour location filming.

Completing the filming, not all the production work

The Sunny Heights session completed filming for Magical Mystery Tour, but it did not mark the end of editing, soundtrack preparation or mixing. Those stages continued after 3 November as the material was assembled for television.

The project had developed over several months. McCartney’s early ideas are explored in the story of his return to England on 12 April 1967, while the road-filming phase began with the Magical Mystery Tour shoot on 11 September. The Weybridge inserts were a final addition to that wider body of footage.

The group’s other recording work also overlapped with the film’s completion. The previous day they had been occupied with recording and mixing Hello, Goodbye, which became part of the American Magical Mystery Tour album rather than one of the film’s six soundtrack songs.

The Christmas television broadcast

Magical Mystery Tour was first broadcast on BBC1 on Boxing Day, 26 December 1967, in black and white. BBC2 followed with a colour showing on 5 January 1968. The first transmission therefore presented the film’s coloured costumes, projections and visual effects to a largely monochrome television audience.

The soundtrack was already available before the broadcast. In Britain it appeared as a six-song double EP on 8 December; Capitol had released an expanded American LP on 27 November, placing the film songs on one side and 1967 single material on the other.

Blue Jay Way appeared in both formats as Harrison’s contribution. Its cello part belonged to the October recording session, while the white-cello images belonged to the final filming day at Sunny Heights.
