Day 4: Filming Help! in the Bahamas - 26th February 1965 | Bay Street & Royal Victoria Hotel

Friday 26th February 1965 – Day 4 of Filming

On Friday 26th February 1965, The Beatles continued location filming for their second feature film, Help!, on New Providence Island in the Bahamas.

The shoot ran from 8:30am to 5:30pm, forming part of the film's first week of principal photography, which had begun on 23rd February 1965.

Filming Locations – 26th February 1965

Yacht Basin & Bay Street, Nassau

Ringo Starr was filmed in scenes set at:

  • The yacht basin
  • In front of the post office on Bay Street, Nassau

These sequences formed part of the ongoing narrative in which Ringo's character is pursued due to the sacrificial ring central to the film's plot.

Royal Victoria Hotel Gardens

Ringo also appeared alongside George Harrison in scenes filmed in a kapok treehouse located within the gardens of the Royal Victoria Hotel.

The Royal Victoria Hotel served as one of the Bahamas shoot's most visually distinctive backdrops, contributing to the film's colourful tropical aesthetic — a marked departure from the monochrome style of A Hard Day's Night (1964).

Nassau Public Library

John Lennon was filmed running from the public library, shouting for Ringo — part of the escalating chase narrative that drives much of Help!.

Lake Cunningham – Prison Camp Scenes

Additional material shot on 26th February included scenes not featuring The Beatles, filmed at Lake Cunningham, which doubled as a location for the film's prison camp sequences.

This mixture of principal cast and secondary action filming was typical of the tightly scheduled Bahamas production phase.

Production Context

The Bahamas location shoot (23rd February – early March 1965):

  • Marked The Beatles' first feature film in colour.
  • Reflected the group's growing international celebrity.
  • Was directed by Richard Lester.
  • Provided much of the film's outdoor action sequences.

The New Providence filming days established the adventurous tone that distinguished Help! from its predecessor.
