Day 5: Filming Help! in the Bahamas - 27th February 1965 | Balmoral Island

Saturday 27th February 1965 - Day 5 of Filming

On Saturday 27th February 1965, The Beatles were in the Bahamas for the fifth day of location shooting on their second feature film, Help!.

Filming took place on Balmoral Island, a small private cay just off Nassau. Among the material shot that day were sequences later used for the song Another Girl, featuring the band performing against the now-iconic tropical backdrop.

Historical Context

Principal photography for Help! began on 23rd February 1965 in the Bahamas. The location work provided the film's vibrant colour palette and exotic tone — a marked contrast to the black-and-white austerity of A Hard Day's Night (1964).

By 27 February:

  • The Beatles were filming performance-style inserts.
  • Director Richard Lester was capturing dynamic, kinetic footage designed to match the group's irreverent on-screen persona.
  • The Caribbean setting reinforced the film's adventure-comedy aesthetic.
  • The Bahamas sequences remain some of the most visually distinctive in the film.

Balmoral Island → Discovery Island

  • Originally known as Balmoral Island at the time of filming.
  • Renamed Discovery Island in 1992.
  • Located just off Nassau, accessible by boat.
  • The island was (and remains) privately owned.

For Beatles location historians, this renaming is important when tracing filming sites today.

Why 27th February 1965 Matters

The Bahamas shoot was significant for several reasons:

  • It marked The Beatles' first feature filmed in colour.
  • It showed their growing confidence as screen personalities.
  • It tied their image to global, jet-set modernity.
  • It cemented the pop-video-style performance insert — a precursor to modern music video conventions.

The "Another Girl" sequence in particular captures Paul McCartney miming the song while playfully handling a prop guitar — an image now embedded in Beatles visual history.
