Ringo Starr And His Third All-Starr Band – Volume 1 was released on 12 August 1997 as the third live album by Ringo Starr. It was recorded at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan, on 27 June 1995 — the first of two consecutive nights at the venue during the 1995 All-Starr Band tour.
Release and availability
The album was a limited edition of 10,000 copies, available exclusively from Blockbuster video stores in North America, priced at $5.99. Its restricted distribution meant it did not chart in any territory.
Three of the album’s recordings later appeared on the 2001 box set The Anthology… So Far: ‘Boris The Spider’ (John Entwistle), ‘People Got To Be Free’ (Felix Cavaliere), and ‘You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’ (Randy Bachman).
The Blockbuster-exclusive release model was an unusual distribution strategy for the era, reflecting the dominance of video rental chains as retail destinations in the mid-to-late 1990s. Blockbuster had around 8,000 stores worldwide at its peak. The chain filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

The third All-Starr Band
The 1995 All-Starr Band comprised Ringo Starr, Randy Bachman (Bachman-Turner Overdrive / The Guess Who), Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad), Billy Preston (who had played on The Beatles’ Let It Be sessions), Felix Cavaliere (The Rascals), John Entwistle (The Who), Mark Rivera, and Zak Starkey (Ringo’s son, later drummer of The Who).
The tour ran for 50 dates across Japan and North America between June and August 1995. The Budokan recording captured the band at the midpoint of the Japanese leg, before the North American dates began in July.
