Of the four Beatles, Paul McCartney had the most to prove after the split. He had been the one to announce the break-up ā in April 1970, via a self-interview included with his debut solo album ā and the press had not been kind. Critics dismissed his early solo work as lightweight. John Lennon was publicly contemptuous. The consensus, for a moment, was that McCartney had been the lesser talent all along.
What followed was one of the greatest comebacks in the history of popular music.
The Early Solo Years
McCartney's first two solo albums ā McCartney (1970) and Ram (1971) ā were home-recorded, intimate, and deliberately lo-fi. Critics were baffled. Lennon was furious about perceived digs in the lyrics of "Too Many People" and responded with "How Do You Sleep?", one of the most savage public attacks one musician has ever made on another.
But McCartney was not retreating. He was regrouping.
Wings: The Band Nobody Expected
In 1971, McCartney formed Wings with his wife Linda, guitarist Denny Laine, and a rotating cast of musicians. The critical establishment was dismissive ā a Beatle playing in a pub band with his wife. McCartney ignored them entirely.
Wings spent 1972 touring university campuses in a van, unannounced, playing to whoever turned up. It was the most un-Beatle thing McCartney could have done ā and it worked. By the time Wings released Band on the Run in 1973, recorded in Lagos under chaotic circumstances after half the band quit, they had become something genuinely formidable.
Band on the Run
Band on the Run was the album that silenced the critics. Recorded in Nigeria with only McCartney, Linda, and Denny Laine after the rest of the band walked out days before the sessions, it was a triumph of determination and creativity. The title track, "Jet", "Helen Wheels", "Mrs Vandebilt" ā it was McCartney at his most inventive and confident since Abbey Road.
It reached number one in both the UK and the US. The critical rehabilitation was complete.
Wings Over America
The Wings Over America tour of 1975ā76 was the largest rock tour ever mounted at that point ā 31 cities across the United States, playing to over 600,000 people. McCartney had not toured since The Beatles' final concert at Candlestick Park in 1966. A decade later, he returned to the stage as the leader of his own band, playing Beatles songs alongside Wings material, and proved that he remained one of the greatest live performers in the world.
The accompanying triple live album, Wings Over America, reached number one in the US. It remains one of the definitive live rock records of the 1970s.
Beyond Wings
Wings dissolved in 1981 following the death of John Lennon and the departure of Denny Laine. McCartney continued as a solo artist, releasing a string of albums through the 1980s and 1990s, collaborating with Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Elvis Costello, and eventually returning to touring on a scale that few artists have matched. His Glastonbury headline set in 2022, at the age of 80, was one of the most celebrated festival performances in the event's history.
He has never really stopped. He is, by any measure, the most successful solo artist to emerge from The Beatles ā and one of the most successful musicians in the history of popular music.
