In January 1969, The Beatles gathered at Twickenham Film Studios with cameras rolling and began what was supposed to be a return to basics: rehearsing new songs, performing them live, and filming the whole process for a television special. What actually happened was something far more complicated, far more painful, and — thanks to Peter Jackson's extraordinary 2021 documentary — far more human than anyone had previously understood.
The sessions produced two albums: Get Back, which was shelved; and Let It Be, which was released in May 1970 — a month after The Beatles had officially broken up. They also produced one of the most famous moments in rock history: the rooftop concert at 3 Savile Row on 30th January 1969, the last time The Beatles ever performed together in public.

The Get Back Sessions: What Really Happened
The original plan, conceived by McCartney, was straightforward: The Beatles would rehearse a set of new songs, perform them live in front of an audience — possibly at the Roundhouse, possibly in Libya, possibly in a Roman amphitheatre — and the whole process would be filmed. It would be a return to their roots as a live band, a corrective to the studio complexity of the previous two years.
It began badly. Twickenham Film Studios was cold, cavernous, and inhospitable. The cameras were intrusive. The songs weren't ready. The tensions that had been building since the White Album sessions — Lennon's increasing detachment, Harrison's frustration at having his songs dismissed, McCartney's tendency to direct and instruct — surfaced immediately and on film.
On 10th January 1969, George Harrison quit the band. He walked out of Twickenham after an argument with McCartney and didn't return for a week. When he came back, it was on the condition that the live concert idea was abandoned. The sessions moved to the basement of Apple Corps' headquarters at 3 Savile Row in Mayfair, where a new studio was being built.
The atmosphere improved. Billy Preston — a keyboard player who had known The Beatles since their Hamburg days — was invited to join the sessions, and his presence seemed to ease the tension. The cameras kept rolling. Songs began to take shape: "Get Back", "Don't Let Me Down", "Let It Be", "The Long and Winding Road", "Two of Us", "I've Got a Feeling".
The Rooftop Concert: 30th January 1969
On the morning of 30th January 1969, The Beatles carried their equipment to the roof of 3 Savile Row and performed an unannounced concert for whoever happened to be in the street below. It was lunchtime in Mayfair. Office workers stopped. Crowds gathered. People climbed onto neighbouring rooftops. The police eventually arrived and asked them to stop — though the officers were notably reluctant to interrupt.
The set lasted 42 minutes. They played "Get Back" three times, "Don't Let Me Down" twice, and also performed "I've Got a Feeling", "One After 909", and "Dig a Pony". Lennon closed the concert with characteristic wit: "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition."
It was the last time The Beatles ever performed together in public. The rooftop concert remains one of the most celebrated moments in rock history — spontaneous, joyful, and tinged with the knowledge of what was coming. The address — 3 Savile Row — has become as significant to Beatles fans as Abbey Road or the Cavern Club.
The Album's Troubled History
The tapes from the January sessions sat unfinished for over a year. Glyn Johns made two attempts to mix them into an album — both were rejected. In early 1970, the tapes were handed to Phil Spector, who added orchestral overdubs and choral arrangements to several tracks, most controversially to McCartney's "The Long and Winding Road".
McCartney was furious. He had not been consulted. He later described Spector's production as "the worst thing that's ever been done to any of my songs". His attempts to have the overdubs removed before release were unsuccessful. The album came out in May 1970 as Let It Be, with Spector's production intact.
In 2003, McCartney finally released the album as he had originally intended: Let It Be… Naked, stripped of Spector's overdubs, resequenced, and restored to something closer to the raw, live sound the sessions had been designed to capture.
Peter Jackson's Get Back: Seeing It Whole
For decades, the received wisdom about the January 1969 sessions was shaped by Michael Lindsay-Hogg's 1970 documentary Let It Be — a film that emphasised the tension and conflict, leaving viewers with the impression of a band in its death throes.
In 2021, Peter Jackson changed everything. Given access to 60 hours of footage and 150 hours of audio from the sessions, Jackson spent three years editing it into an eight-hour documentary: Get Back. What emerged was a radically different picture — not a band falling apart, but a band still capable of extraordinary creativity, warmth, and humour, even under pressure.
Viewers saw Lennon and McCartney writing "Don't Let Me Down" together in real time. They saw Harrison arrive one morning with "Something" fully formed. They saw Ringo, patient and steady, holding everything together. They saw the rooftop concert in full, from multiple angles, for the first time. And they saw four men who, whatever their differences, still loved making music together.
Get Back won three Academy Awards and transformed the way the world understood The Beatles' final chapter. It is essential viewing for any serious fan.
The Songs
"Get Back" — McCartney's driving rock and roll song, originally conceived as a satirical commentary on anti-immigration sentiment before evolving into something more straightforwardly exuberant. The rooftop version, with Billy Preston on electric piano, is definitive.
"Don't Let Me Down" — Lennon's raw, desperate love song for Yoko Ono. One of his most emotionally direct performances. The rooftop version, with Lennon forgetting the words to the second verse and improvising, is one of the most human moments in Beatles history.
"Let It Be" — McCartney's hymn, inspired by a dream in which his mother — who died of cancer when Paul was fourteen — came to him and told him to let it be. The piano introduction is one of the most recognisable in popular music. George Martin's string arrangement on the single version is among his finest work.
"The Long and Winding Road" — McCartney's most overtly emotional ballad, written about the road from his farm in Scotland to the nearest village. Spector's orchestral overdubs transformed it into something McCartney never intended. The Naked version restores its original intimacy.
"Two of Us" — McCartney's acoustic duet with Lennon, ostensibly about driving around the countryside with Linda. One of the warmest, most affectionate songs in the Beatles catalogue — two old friends, still in harmony.
"Across the Universe" — Lennon's meditation, written in 1967 and finally released here. The lyric — "Jai guru deva om / Nothing's gonna change my world" — is among the most beautiful he ever wrote. NASA transmitted it into deep space in 2008.

The Legacy: From Let It Be to Get Back
For thirty years, Let It Be was understood as a document of collapse — a band falling apart in real time, captured on film. Peter Jackson's Get Back changed that understanding permanently. What the full footage reveals is not a band in its death throes but a band still capable of extraordinary things — still writing great songs, still making each other laugh, still, in their way, loving each other.
The rooftop concert is the proof. Whatever was happening behind the scenes, whatever legal battles and personal grievances were building, on that roof on 30th January 1969, The Beatles were still The Beatles. Lennon grinning through forgotten lyrics. McCartney driving the band forward. Harrison steady and focused. Ringo, as always, holding the beat.
