On 3rd December 1965, The Beatles released their sixth studio album and changed the course of popular music. Rubber Soul was not the first Beatles album to show artistic ambition ā but it was the first to make that ambition the point. Folk influences, introspective lyrics, experimental studio techniques, a cover photograph that looked like nothing else in pop music ā everything about Rubber Soul announced that The Beatles were no longer content to be the biggest band in the world. They wanted to be something more.

The Album
Rubber Soul was recorded in just four weeks in October and November 1965 ā an extraordinary creative sprint that produced twelve tracks of remarkable consistency and depth. "Norwegian Wood", "In My Life", "Michelle", "Nowhere Man", "The Word", "Girl" ā the songwriting had taken a quantum leap. Lennon and McCartney were writing about real things: relationships, identity, loneliness, the search for meaning. George Harrison contributed "Think For Yourself" and "If I Needed Someone", his best Beatles compositions to date.
The cover photograph, by Robert Freeman, was created by projecting a slide onto cardboard at an angle, stretching and distorting the image. The result ā four faces elongated and slightly unreal ā perfectly captured the album's experimental spirit. It was unlike any pop album cover that had come before it.
Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys heard Rubber Soul and immediately began work on Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds inspired Sgt. Pepper's. The chain of influence that runs from Rubber Soul through the rest of the 1960s is almost impossible to overstate.
