On Friday 25 March 1966, The Beatles took part in one of the most controversial photo sessions of their career at a studio at 1 The Vale, Chelsea, London, photographed by Robert Whitaker. The resulting images β€” showing the band in white butcher coats surrounded by raw meat and dismembered dolls β€” were conceived as a surrealist art statement about fame and identity.
