23 April 1960 – The Nerk Twins Live at Fox and Hounds, Caversham

On Saturday 23 April 1960, John Lennon and Paul McCartney performed as The Nerk Twins at the Fox and Hounds pub in Caversham, Berkshire — one of two informal acoustic sets during an Easter visit to Paul’s cousin Betty Robbins, who owned the pub with her husband. Playing without microphones, they opened with The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise before running through rock ‘n’ roll and country standards. A rare pre-Beatles glimpse of Lennon and McCartney performing together as a duo.

23 April 1961 – The Beatles Live at the Top Ten Club, Hamburg

On Sunday 23 April 1961, The Beatles performed their 23rd night at the Top Ten Club on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn — part of their gruelling 92-night residency under owner Peter Eckhorn. Playing 7pm–2am on weekdays and 8pm–4am on weekends with only 15-minute hourly breaks, each member earned 35 Deutsche Marks (~£3) per day. By the time they left Hamburg on 1 July 1961, they had accumulated 503 hours of stage time.

23 April 1971 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono Arrested in Mallorca

On Friday 23 April 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were arrested in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, during a custody battle over Ono’s daughter Kyoko Cox. Ono had taken Kyoko from a daycare nursery in Manacor, prompting her father Tony Cox to alert authorities. Lennon and Ono were held for approximately 14 hours before release; a magistrate ordered Kyoko’s return to her father. Ono would not see Kyoko again until January 2001.
