Recording: ‘Zoo Gang’ by Wings
Wednesday 25 April 1973 | Paul McCartney, Studio, Wings
Wings began recording ‘Zoo Gang’ at EMI Studios, London on 25 April 1973, laying down the backing track for what would later become the UK B-side to the 1974 single ‘Band On The Run’.
The track was commissioned as the theme for the television drama The Zoo Gang, produced by Sir Lew Grade’s ATV and broadcast in 1974 as a six-part series. Paul McCartney was asked specifically to compose the theme music.
Recording took place in Studio Two with McCartney producing and Alan Parsons engineering. The core lineup for the session included Paul and Linda McCartney alongside drummer Denny Seiwell, while Denny Laine and Henry McCullough were not present.
The band recorded 15 takes of the backing track, with the final take selected as the master. During the session, a loose improvisation titled ‘Zoological Blow’ was also taped, reflecting the experimental studio atmosphere typical of early Wings sessions.
The track was completed on 7 May 1973 with the addition of an accordion overdub, finalising its distinctive theme-like character ahead of its later single release.
