Wings on BBC Top Of The Pops – 4 April 1973
Wednesday 4 April 1973 | Paul McCartney, Television, Wings
On 4 April 1973, Wings appeared on the BBC’s Top Of The Pops at BBC Television Centre in London’s White City.
Performance Details
Wings arrived in the afternoon. Paul McCartney wore a jacket with “MACCA” hand-stitched on the front. Backstage, he gave interviews to journalists from Disc and Circus magazines.
For the performance of ‘My Love’, McCartney sang live over the backing track. A mono mix had been created earlier that morning at Abbey Road Studios and couriered to the Television Centre.
Backstage Anecdotes
Not all went smoothly. Guitarist Henry McCullough arrived drunk. Although he only had to mime, he struggled during his solo:
“I was totally langered. As we got to the solo, I knew I was going to throw up. I only had time to leap off stage and dive behind scenery – still playing the solo as I was being sick. The worst of it was I’d sent my mother a postcard: ‘Watch Top Of The Pops on Thursday.’ McCartney was very tolerant and never said anything. He’d seen everything in his Beatle days, so nothing shocked him.” — Henry McCullough, Irish Folk, Trad And Blues: A Secret History, Colin Harper & Trevor Hodgett
