Wings live: Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale – 21 May 1976
Friday 21 May 1976 | Live, Paul McCartney, Wings
Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York, USA
Wings performed at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York on 21 May 1976 — the 40th night of the 65-date Wings Over The World Tour. The performance of 'My Love' from this night was selected for inclusion on the 1976 live album Wings Over America. Paul McCartney returned to the Nassau Coliseum on 21 April 2002 (Driving World Tour) and on 26 and 27 September 2017 (One On One Tour).
The Nassau Coliseum
The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, Nassau County, Long Island, opened in 1972 and became one of the principal arena venues in the New York metropolitan area. With a capacity of around 16,000 for concerts, it hosted major rock acts throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Its location on Long Island — accessible from both New York City and the surrounding suburbs — made it a natural stop on any major US tour. The show on 21 May 1976 was followed the next day by a Boston Garden date and then two nights at Madison Square Garden on 24 and 25 May.
Wings Over America
Wings Over America was a triple live album released in December 1976, documenting the North American leg of the Wings Over The World Tour. It reached number one in the US and number eight in the UK. The 'My Love' performance included on the album was recorded at this Nassau Coliseum show on 21 May 1976. The album was one of the best-selling live albums of the 1970s and remains the definitive document of Wings at their commercial peak.
The Wings Line-Up
Wings for the Wings Over The World Tour consisted of:
- Paul McCartney — vocals, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards
- Linda McCartney — vocals, keyboards
- Denny Laine — vocals, guitar, bass guitar
- Jimmy McCulloch — guitar, vocals
- Joe English — drums
The touring band was augmented by a horns and brass section: Howie Casey (saxophone), Tony Dorsey (trombone), Steve Howard (trumpet, flugelhorn), and Thaddeus Richard (saxophone, clarinet). The brass section gave the live show a fuller, more orchestrated sound than the studio recordings and was a significant part of the tour's visual and sonic identity.
The Wings Over The World Tour
The Wings Over The World Tour was the largest and most ambitious tour of McCartney's career to that point. It ran from September 1975 to October 1976, covering the UK, Australia, Europe, North America, and a final European leg. The North American leg alone ran to 31 dates between May and June 1976. The tour grossed an estimated $25 million and was seen by over 600,000 people. It was the first time McCartney had toured the United States since The Beatles' final US tour in August 1966 — a gap of almost ten years.
