Wings Live at Bristol Hippodrome β 11 May 1973
On Friday 11 May 1973, Wings opened their UK tour at the Bristol Hippodrome β one of the most eagerly anticipated live events in British rock that year, and a landmark moment in Paul McCartney's post-Beatles career.
The 1973 Wings UK tour marked the band's emergence as a genuine headline act, following the enormous commercial success of My Love and the Red Rose Speedway album. For McCartney, taking to the stage again as a touring artist was a significant statement of intent.

Wings in 1973 β A Band Finding Its Feet
By May 1973, Wings had evolved considerably from the loose, experimental outfit that had toured university campuses in a van in 1972. The lineup for the Bristol Hippodrome show featured:
- Paul McCartney β bass, vocals
- Linda McCartney β keyboards, vocals
- Denny Laine β guitar, vocals
- Henry McCullough β lead guitar
- Denny Seiwell β drums
This lineup β the classic mid-period Wings β was tight, confident and capable of delivering a powerful live show that silenced critics who had questioned McCartney's ability to succeed outside The Beatles.
The Bristol Hippodrome
The Bristol Hippodrome is one of the UK's most celebrated theatre venues, located on St Augustine's Parade in the heart of Bristol city centre. With a capacity of over 1,800, it provided an intimate but prestigious setting for the opening night of the tour.
The venue has hosted some of the biggest names in entertainment since its opening in 1912, and a Wings show in May 1973 was entirely in keeping with its tradition of landmark live events.
Red Rose Speedway and the 1973 Tour
Red Rose Speedway had been released just weeks before the tour opened, giving Wings a strong body of new material to showcase alongside McCartney's back catalogue. The album reached number one in the US and number five in the UK, providing the commercial momentum the tour needed.
The 1973 UK dates were followed by a European tour later in the year, cementing Wings as one of the most successful live acts of the decade.
John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were each active with their own solo projects during this period, with all four former Beatles enjoying productive post-group careers.
