Friday 26 October 1973 | UK single release | Paul McCartney and Wings
Wings released “Helen Wheels” in the United Kingdom on 26 October 1973, backed with “Country Dreamer”. Issued as Apple R 5993, the single reached No. 12 on the UK singles chart.
The title was a name rather than the introduction of a fictional woman: “Helen Wheels” was Paul and Linda McCartney’s nickname for their Land Rover, a play on “hell on wheels”. The record arrived ahead of Band on the Run, but its relationship to the album differed between Britain and America.

Who was Helen Wheels?
Paul’s official single page identifies Helen Wheels as the McCartneys’ Land Rover. The pun gives the song its road-going identity without requiring “Helen” to be treated as a separate character.
That detail is central to understanding the title. It is not a reference to the album-cover cast of Band on the Run, nor should it be confused with the country setting suggested by the other side of the single.
The supplied Helen Wheels picture sleeve

The sleeve carries “Paul McCartney & Wings” across the top, with the two song titles in orange. Paul is pictured holding a guitar.
Artwork and release details need separate identification. A sleeve illustrating an international single can be relevant to the UK release story without necessarily being the packaging used for Apple R 5993 in Britain.
Country Dreamer: the other side of the record
“Country Dreamer” came from the Red Rose Speedway sessions, rather than the sessions that produced “Helen Wheels”. It had not appeared on the original Red Rose Speedway LP.
The pairing therefore brought together songs from different recording contexts. Calling it a Band on the Run-era single does not mean both sides were newly recorded during the same album sessions.
Later reissues have placed “Country Dreamer” alongside different albums as bonus material. That later availability should not obscure its role here as the B-side of the October 1973 single.
The UK chart run
Official Charts records a first chart date of 3 November 1973 and a peak of No. 12. Its listing identifies Apple and catalogue number R5993, matching the release details.
The chart date is not the release date. The record was issued on 26 October before appearing in the dated chart listing. The No. 12 figure describes its eventual peak, not a position it held on the day of release.
The Official Charts entry for Helen Wheels supplies those chart facts.

Why Helen Wheels appears on some Band on the Run editions
“Helen Wheels” was recorded during the Band on the Run sessions, but it did not appear on the original British album. It was included on the original American edition.
Paul’s official single notes explicitly confirm that difference. It explains why two listeners can remember different original album programmes without either simply misremembering the song.
The US single followed on 12 November 1973, backed with “Country Dreamer”, and carried Apple catalogue number 1869. Those American details belong alongside, not in place of, the UK date and R 5993 catalogue number.
The album work continued around the release
The single’s arrival did not mean every Band on the Run production task had ended. Our 25 October 1973 Kingsway mixing article follows the neighbouring album work.
That connection is chronological rather than a claim that “Helen Wheels” itself was recorded or mixed at the session covered there. A release date, an album mixing date and a song’s original recording history answer different questions.
