The Beatles Mix & Edit ‘Within You Without You’ – 4 April 1967
Tuesday 4 April 1967 | Studio, Sgt Pepper
On 4 April 1967, George Harrison and The Beatles completed the mixing and editing of ‘Within You Without You’ for the forthcoming Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. The session was held in the control room of Studio Two, EMI Studios, Abbey Road, with George Martin producing and Geoff Emerick engineering.
Mixing Details
The session ran from 7:00pm until 12:45am and produced both final mono and stereo mixes. For each version, the tape was slightly sped up, raising the key from C major to C♯ major.
When originally recorded on 15 March 1967, the track was conceived as three parts but recorded as one continuous piece. This session continued to use the part numbering system for mixing:
- Mono mixes: Mixes 6-11 for part one, mix 12 for parts two and three, edited together with additional effects.
- Stereo mixes: Part one mixed in three attempts (1-3), parts two and three mixed in mixes 4-5, then edited together with effects mirroring the mono version.
Overdubs and Effects
The final edits included:
- Additional laughter overdub at the end of the song
- Artificial double tracking on Harrison’s vocals
- Around one minute removed from the original running time
- The laughter was sourced from the Abbey Road sound effects library, tape labelled Volume 5: Applause and Laughter
The edits in both the final mono and stereo mixes can be heard clearly at 2’23” into the track, showcasing Abbey Road’s meticulous studio techniques.
