The Beatles Record BBC Saturday Club Session – 31 March 1964
Tuesday 31 March 1964 | Radio
On 31 March 1964, following their day filming at London’s Scala Theatre, The Beatles recorded a session for the BBC radio show Saturday Club at the Playhouse Theatre.
The session took place between 7.00pm and 10.30pm, including rehearsals, and captured the band in a notably fresh and energised form.
A Rare Break From Live Performances
March 1964 marked a significant moment in The Beatles’ career, as they had not performed a single live concert throughout the month — the first such break in at least four years.
This pause from relentless touring resulted in a performance that sounded spontaneous and revitalised, in contrast to some of their more routine BBC appearances in preceding months.
Saturday Club Session Setlist
The Beatles recorded seven songs for the broadcast, including several tracks that had yet to be officially released at the time:
- ‘Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby’
- ‘I Call Your Name’
- ‘I Got A Woman’
- ‘You Can’t Do That’
- ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’
- ‘Sure To Fall (In Love With You)’
- ‘Long Tall Sally’
Broadcast and Legacy
The session was broadcast on the BBC Light Programme on 4 April 1964.
Although none of the performances were included on the 1994 Live At The BBC release, the track ‘I Got A Woman’ was later issued on On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2 in 2013.
During breaks in recording, John Lennon also gave two interviews to the BBC Home Service. Among those present at the session was Melody Maker journalist Ray Coleman.
