The Beatles Recording Session – I Want You (She’s So Heavy) & Oh! Darling (20 April 1969)

Recording & Mixing: I Want You (She's So Heavy) / Oh! Darling

Sunday 20 April 1969 | Abbey Road, Studio

On 20 April 1969, The Beatles worked at EMI Studios, Abbey Road in Studio Three during a late-night session running approximately 7.00pm to 12.45am. The session focused on continued development of John Lennon's I Want You (She's So Heavy) alongside the first proper studio recording attempts for Paul McCartney's Oh! Darling.

Work on I Want You (She's So Heavy) continued from earlier sessions, following a reduction mix completed on 18 April 1969 which had opened space for additional overdubs. By this stage, the backing track and layered electric guitar arpeggios by Lennon and George Harrison were already in place.

During this session, further instrumentation was added, including congas and Hammond organ, the latter performed by Billy Preston. Following these overdubs, the track was considered essentially complete, although additional effects and white noise were later added on 8 August 1969.

The session also marked the first structured studio recording of Oh! Darling, after numerous informal performances during the earlier Get Back / Let It Be sessions across January 1969.

A total of 26 takes of the backing track were recorded live, with McCartney on piano and guide vocals, Lennon on guitar, Harrison on bass guitar, and Ringo Starr on drums. The final take of the day was regarded as the strongest.

The multitrack configuration placed Harrison's bass on track one, Starr's drums on track two, Billy Preston's organ on track three, McCartney's piano on track four, Lennon's guitar on track five, and McCartney's guide vocal on track six.

An additional recording made during the session included a cover of Joe South's The Games People Play, with lead vocals from John Lennon.

A preliminary stereo mix of the session material was created at the end of the night but ultimately not used. At this stage, Oh! Darling carried the working title Oh! Darling (I'll Never Do You No Harm), while I Want You (She's So Heavy) was listed simply as I Want You.
