On 9 August 1963, The Beatles performed at the Springfield Ballroom in Jersey β their third of four concerts on the island during their Channel Islands visit. The previous evening, 8 August, they had flown to Guernsey for their sole concert at Candie Gardens in St Peter Port. They flew back to Jersey on 9 August for this evening show.
The Channel Islands Visit
The Channel Islands booking was promoted by Les De La Mare, who paid Β£1,000 for the five Channel Islands engagements. The Springfield Ballroom in Jersey was the main venue for the visit, with The Beatles performing there on four occasions during the trip. The Guernsey show at Candie Gardens on 8 August was the only concert outside Jersey.
By August 1963, The Beatles were the biggest act in Britain. Their third single βFrom Me To Youβ had reached number one in May, and βShe Loves Youβ β which would become one of the best-selling singles in UK chart history β was just a fortnight away from release on 23 August 1963. The Channel Islands shows were among the last intimate engagements The Beatles would play before the full force of Beatlemania made such appearances impossible.
