Saturday 5 November 1960 | Live performance | Hamburg, Germany | By Beatles Fabdom
On 5 November 1960, The Beatles played their 33rd night at the Kaiserkeller in Hamburg. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best returned to the basement club at Große Freiheit 36, where they shared the nightly programme with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes’ drummer was Ringo Starr. Two years before he joined The Beatles, he was working alongside his future bandmates in the same Hamburg club, with the groups alternating sets through the night. Pete Best remained The Beatles’ drummer, while Sutcliffe played bass and McCartney was still a guitarist.

The Beatles’ 33rd night at the Kaiserkeller
The Saturday appearance followed the 32nd night on 4 November. The engagement had begun on 4 October, after The Beatles’ first Hamburg booking at the nearby Indra Club. By 5 November, the musicians had spent more than a month returning to the Kaiserkeller stage.
This was a working nightclub residency rather than a sequence of short headline concerts. The Beatles and the Hurricanes supplied music across extended evenings, taking turns on stage. Playing repeatedly in the same room gave the musicians sustained experience of maintaining an audience’s attention and working together under demanding conditions.
The Beatles were still a five-piece Liverpool band without a British hit record. Brian Epstein had not yet become their manager, and the personnel differed from the quartet that would record at EMI. Hamburg brought Lennon, McCartney and Harrison together on stage with Best and Sutcliffe, while Ringo worked in the other group on the bill.
From the Indra to Große Freiheit 36
The Beatles began their first Hamburg engagement at the Indra on 17 August 1960. Promoter Allan Williams helped arrange their work with club owner Bruno Koschmider. After their Indra appearances ended in early October, they moved to Koschmider’s Kaiserkeller.
Both venues stood on Große Freiheit in St. Pauli. The Indra was at number 64; the Kaiserkeller was at number 36, close to the Reeperbahn. The move placed the band in another room within the same compact nightclub district.
The Kaiserkeller belongs to the first chapter of The Beatles’ Hamburg history. The Star-Club, associated with later visits and the December 1962 live recordings, stood at number 39 on the same street. The Top Ten was another separate venue on the Reeperbahn. Their names recur in accounts of the band’s development, but they were distinct clubs with different engagements.
The five-piece Beatles in November 1960
| Musician | Role |
|---|---|
| John Lennon | Guitar and vocals |
| Paul McCartney | Guitar and vocals |
| George Harrison | Guitar and vocals |
| Stuart Sutcliffe | Bass guitar |
| Pete Best | Drums |
Pete Best had joined shortly before the musicians left Liverpool. His place behind the drums is an important part of the first Hamburg visit: Ringo’s presence at the Kaiserkeller did not mean that he was already a member of The Beatles.
Stuart Sutcliffe was the bass player. His friendship with Lennon and his interest in art were part of the group’s background before Hamburg; his relationship with photographer Astrid Kirchherr became central to his life in the city.
McCartney’s later role as The Beatles’ bass guitarist should not be projected back onto this engagement. In November 1960, the group’s three guitarists were Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, with Sutcliffe on bass.
Rory Storm and the Hurricanes: Ringo on the same bill
The Beatles alternated sets with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, another Liverpool group. The arrangement made the Hurricanes fellow performers across the evening rather than a conventional opening act who played once and left.
Ringo Starr’s work with the Hurricanes brought him into regular contact with The Beatles. Both groups faced the practical demands of the same club, heard one another perform and became familiar with each other’s playing. Ringo would join The Beatles in August 1962, but during this residency he remained the Hurricanes’ drummer.
The shared bill also connects with the story of Klaus Voormann’s first encounters with the musicians. The BBC’s account of the Hamburg beginnings describes Voormann entering the Kaiserkeller while the Hurricanes were playing, then hearing The Beatles after the changeover. He subsequently brought Astrid Kirchherr and Jürgen Vollmer to the club.
Those friendships belong to the wider Hamburg engagement. They brought the band into contact with young artists whose photographs, design and personal relationships became part of The Beatles’ early history.
Astrid Kirchherr’s portrait of The Beatles in Hamburg

Kirchherr photographed the five-piece band with their instruments at the Hamburger Dom fairground. The leather jackets, guitars and fairground structure place the image within the visual world of their first German visit.
Her photographs preserve Best and Sutcliffe as members of The Beatles, before the familiar suited quartet of the record-breaking years. The band’s official tribute to Astrid Kirchherr recalls her friendship with the musicians and her distinctive black-and-white portraits.

The final weeks of the first Hamburg visit
The 5 November appearance came several weeks before the difficulties that brought the visit to an end. McCartney and Best were arrested on 29 November, during the troubled conclusion of their work in Hamburg.
For this Saturday night, the focus remained the regular club programme: five Beatles sharing the playing duties with the Hurricanes. Their first Hamburg visit was still in progress, with further nightly appearances ahead.
