On Sunday 27 August 1961, The Beatles performed their 14th show at the Casbah Coffee Club in Hayman Green, Liverpool — one of the most intimate and historically significant venues in the entire Beatles story. The Casbah was owned by Mona Best, the mother of Beatles drummer Pete Best, and it held a unique place in the group’s affections as one of the first venues to give them a regular platform in Liverpool.

The Casbah Coffee Club

The Casbah Coffee Club was opened by Mona Best in the basement of her large Victorian home at 8 Hayman Green in the West Derby area of Liverpool, on 29 August 1959 — the same night The Quarrymen played the opening night. Mona Best was a formidable and entrepreneurial woman who transformed the basement of the family home into a thriving teenage club, decorating it herself with the help of the young musicians who would play there, including John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.

The venue held around 300 people and quickly became one of the most popular teenage clubs in Liverpool, drawing crowds from across the city every weekend. Its low ceilings, intimate atmosphere and the sense of being somewhere genuinely underground — in every sense — gave it a character quite unlike the ballrooms and civic halls where most Liverpool groups performed.

The connection between the Casbah and The Beatles was personal as well as professional. Pete Best had joined the group in August 1960, just days before the first Hamburg trip, and his mother’s venue remained a home fixture throughout the period of his membership. When Pete Best was replaced by Ringo Starr in August 1962, The Beatles’ relationship with the Casbah effectively ended — their final appearance there was on 24 June 1962, just weeks before the change of drummer.

The Quarrymen at the Casbah

Before they were The Beatles, John Lennon’s group The Quarrymen performed at the Casbah on seven occasions in 1959, beginning with the opening night:

The Quarrymen’s involvement in the opening of the Casbah was significant. The Casbah in context: Liverpool 1961

By August 1961, The Beatles were a very different group from the one that had first played the Casbah in late 1960. They had completed their first Hamburg residency at the Indra Club (August–October 1960) and the Kaiserkeller (October–November 1960), returned to Liverpool transformed, and were now the most exciting live act on Merseyside. The Cavern Club had become their primary Liverpool base, but the Casbah remained a regular fixture — a more intimate setting where the connection between band and audience was immediate and personal.

The summer of 1961 was also the period in which Brian Epstein first became aware of The Beatles. He would attend his first Cavern Club lunchtime session on 9 November 1961 and sign the group as their manager in January 1962. The Casbah shows of this period were among the last The Beatles played before the machinery of professional management began to reshape their career.

Pete Best was still the drummer at this point. He would be replaced by Ringo Starr on 16 August 1962 — a decision that devastated Mona Best and effectively ended the family’s connection with the group. The Casbah closed shortly afterwards, in June 1962, with The Beatles’ final appearance there just weeks before the drummer change.

The Casbah today

The Casbah Coffee Club is now a Grade II listed building and a significant site on the Liverpool Beatles heritage trail. It is preserved largely as it was during the Beatles era, with the original decorations — including painted ceilings worked on by Lennon, McCartney and Harrison — still visible. It opens for guided tours and is considered one of the most authentic surviving Beatles locations in the world.
