The Beatles Live: Top Ten Club, Hamburg
Thursday 20 April 1961 | Live, The Beatles
On 20 April 1961, The Beatles performed their 20th night at Hamburg's Top Ten Club, continuing what would become their longest continuous residency at a single venue during their early career.
The Top Ten Club was owned by Peter Eckhorn, who paid each member of the group 35 Deutsche Marks (approximately £3 per day at the time). The engagement required an intense performance schedule, with sets running from 7pm to 2am on weekdays and extending to 4am on weekends.
Each hour included a 15-minute break, but the workload remained physically demanding, contributing significantly to the band's development as a tight, high-energy live unit.
The residency proved highly successful, leading Eckhorn to extend The Beatles' contract on two occasions. Their time in Hamburg would ultimately span 92 performances and approximately 503 hours on stage before their final show on 1 July 1961.
