The Beatles Live at the Storyville Jazz Club, Liverpool – 8 March 1962

Thursday 8 March 1962 | Live

On 8 March 1962, The Beatles performed at the Storyville Jazz Club at 13 Temple Street in Liverpool. The performance was the second of three appearances the group made at the venue during its brief period operating under the Storyville name.

The club occupied the premises previously known as the Iron Door Club, an important venue in Liverpool's early rock 'n' roll and beat music scene. The Beatles had already appeared at the location in its earlier incarnation, performing there as The Silver Beetles on 15 May 1960.

The Iron Door and Liverpool's Beat Scene

The Iron Door Club originally opened in April 1960 and quickly became a popular destination for Liverpool's growing community of young musicians and music fans.

In 1961, the venue began operating as the Liverpool Jazz Society, with events promoted by the well-known Liverpool concert organiser Sam Leach. During this period The Beatles appeared at the venue on five occasions in March 1961.

The group's performances that month took place on the following dates:

6 March, 11 March, 13 March, 15 March and 17 March 1961.

These concerts formed part of an intensive schedule of Liverpool performances as the band continued building a strong local following.

The Storyville Jazz Club

By early 1962, the venue had been renamed the Storyville Jazz Club. The Beatles performed there on three occasions that year:

1 March 1962
8 March 1962
15 March 1962

Although the Storyville name was short-lived, the venue remained an active part of Liverpool's music scene.

Later in September 1962, the club reverted once again to its original name, the Iron Door Club, under which it would continue hosting live music for many years.

The Beatles in Liverpool, 1962

During early 1962 The Beatles were still firmly rooted in Liverpool's local club circuit, performing regularly at venues across the city while refining their sound and stage presence.

This period came just months before several major milestones in the band's career, including their audition and eventual recording sessions at EMI Studios with producer George Martin, and the release of their debut single Love Me Do later that year.

Appearances at venues like the Storyville Jazz Club helped maintain the band's growing reputation among Liverpool audiences as one of the most exciting live acts in the city.
