The Beatles Live: Star-Club, Hamburg
Thursday 19 April 1962 | Live, The Beatles
On 19 April 1962, The Beatles performed at the Star-Club in Hamburg, West Germany, marking the seventh night of their first residency at the venue. The Star-Club, newly opened at the time, quickly established itself as one of the city’s premier rock ‘n’ roll venues.
This engagement formed part of a 48-night run across seven weeks, during which The Beatles accumulated approximately 172 hours of stage time. Their demanding performance schedule played a significant role in sharpening their live sound and stage presence.
The residency had begun on 13 April and would conclude on 31 May 1962, with the group departing Hamburg on 2 June. Their only scheduled night off during this period was Good Friday, 20 April.
This was The Beatles’ third major Hamburg residency within two years, following earlier stints at the Indra Club, the Kaiserkeller, and the Top Ten Club — all of which were instrumental in their evolution as a live band.
The date also coincided with the funeral of Stuart Sutcliffe, The Beatles’ original bassist, which took place in Huyton, Merseyside. The band did not attend due to their commitments in Hamburg, though Cynthia Powell was present, along with Stuart’s close friend Rod Murray.
Among those attending from Germany were Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voormann, while family members and early associates, including Louise Harrison and Allan Williams, were also in attendance.
