The Beatles Get Back / Let It Be Sessions Day Four – Tuesday 7th January 1969

The Beatles Get Back Session Twickenham Studios Day 4

The fourth day of The Beatles' Get Back sessions, held on Tuesday 7 January 1969 at Twickenham Film Studios, offered a revealing snapshot of a band caught between past glory and an uncertain future. The tapes from these sessions would later be handed to Phil Spector to produce — a decision that would prove deeply controversial and unite all four Beatles in their displeasure.

A Late Lennon and a Trio Beginning

John Lennon arrived late to the session, leaving Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr to begin the day as a trio. It was during this unguarded opening stretch that the first appearance of "Get Back" occurred — McCartney improvising a melody almost absent-mindedly that would become one of The Beatles' final great singles.

Songs in Development

As the session progressed, the band revisited "Don't Let Me Down", "I've Got A Feeling", "One After 909", and "Gimme Some Truth". Early versions of "Golden Slumbers" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" were also attempted.

Live Show Discussions

Between takes, The Beatles discussed possible venues for a live performance with director Michael Lindsay-Hogg. These conversations would eventually lead to the Rooftop Concert later that month.
