The Beatles Final London Photo Sessions β 9 April 1969
Wednesday 9 April 1969 | Photography

On 9 April 1969, The Beatles took part in one of their final photo sessions together as a group, at a time when public appearances had become increasingly rare. These images belong to the Abbey Road era β one of the most celebrated periods in rock history.

The session took place across two locations in London, capturing a series of now-iconic late-era images of the band. For a broader look at this period, visit our Beatles Knowledge Hub.

Two London Locations
The first photographs were taken at the Madingley Club on Willoughby Road in East Twickenham. The group were pictured leaning against John Lennon's Rolls-Royce, with the River Thames forming the backdrop.

As news spread, a crowd gathered, and The Beatles stopped to sign autographs before moving on to a second nearby location at 4 Ducks Walk.
On the Thames
At Ducks Walk, the band boarded a rowing boat named Fritz Otto Maria Anna and were photographed on the River Thames.

They rowed out to a small island midstream, where they waved back toward photographers positioned on the riverbank, producing a distinctive set of images that stand among the final posed group photographs of The Beatles.

Vehicles and Setting
The group and photographers travelled between locations in three vehicles:
- John Lennon's Rolls-Royce
- A white Mercedes
- A Humber Snipe
The Rolls-Royce in particular became a focal point in the early part of the shoot, reinforcing the band's visual identity during this late stage of their career.
One of the Final Photo Sessions

This session is historically significant as one of the last occasions The Beatles were professionally photographed together.
Later sessions in 1969 would include:
- The Ballad Of John And Yoko single shoot (30 April)
- Get Back album sessions (May)
- Abbey Road cover shoot (8 August)
- Tittenhurst Park session (22 August)
By this point, internal tensions meant full-group appearances were increasingly uncommon, making the 9 April photographs especially valuable. Explore our full Beatles History Hub for more on this era.
