Filming 'Help!' at Twickenham Film Studios
Thursday 22 April 1965 | Film and video
The Beatles were at Twickenham Film Studios on 22 April 1965 to film a performance of 'Help!', the title track of their second feature film.
The sequence, shot in black and white, was designed to resemble a television broadcast and appears early in the finished film. During the scene, the character Clang, played by Leo McKern, is shown watching the performance and throwing darts at the screen in frustration.
The performance footage itself, without the Clang inserts, was later distributed by NEMS Enterprises to television networks as a promotional film for the 'Help!' single, which was released in July 1965.
Unused Scene
Filming also began on an additional sequence set in a drama school, featuring Frankie Howerd and Wendy Richard. Work on this segment continued on 23 and 28 April 1965, but the scene was ultimately omitted from the final cut of the film.
