Tuesday 23rd February 1965 – Day 1 of Filming
On Tuesday 23rd February 1965, The Beatles began filming their second feature film, Help!, in the Bahamas.
Although originally scheduled as a rest day following their flight from London to New Providence Island, production commenced that afternoon — marking the start of a two-week Caribbean location shoot that would define the film's vibrant Technicolor aesthetic.
Why the Bahamas?
The Bahamas location was selected in part due to financial and logistical considerations. The Beatles' financial adviser, Dr Walter Strach, had established a tax arrangement there and was required to reside in the British colony for a year as part of the structure.
As a gesture of goodwill — and to take advantage of the tropical setting — the group agreed to base the initial phase of filming in Nassau.
During the shoot, The Beatles stayed at the Balmoral Club near Cable Beach, which served as their accommodation throughout the Bahamas schedule.
First Scenes Filmed – 23rd February 1965
Filming began in the afternoon with two sequences:
Conch Shell Scene (Unused)
Ringo Starr was filmed listening to conch shells at the docks near Mackey Street, Nassau.
This sequence was later omitted from the final cut of Help!.
Nassau Beach Hotel Pool Scene
Later that day, all four Beatles were filmed swimming fully clothed in the pool at the Nassau Beach Hotel in the West Bay area of the island.
The scene captured the playful, irreverent tone that would characterise much of Help! and immediately distinguished it visually from the monochrome realism of A Hard Day's Night (1964).
Production Schedule – No Days Off
Despite the original intention of a rest day, The Beatles began what would become 14 consecutive days of filming in the Bahamas without a break.
Between 23rd February and 9th March 1965, production would cover:
- Interfield Road and Bay Street
- Royal Victoria Hotel gardens
- Lake Cunningham
- Cabbage Beach (Paradise Island)
- Victoria Beach (Rose Island)
- Nassau International Airport
The Bahamas block established the film's globe-trotting adventure style and marked The Beatles' first feature shot in colour.
