6th March 1963: The Beatles’ Final Appearance on BBC Radio Show Here We Go

On 6th March 1963, The Beatles returned to the BBC for what would become their final appearance on the radio programme Here We Go — part of the BBC Light Programme’s popular youth music output.

Recorded at the Playhouse Theatre in Manchester, the session captured the band at a pivotal moment: just days after the release of their debut album, Please Please Me, and only weeks before Beatlemania would erupt across Britain.

The programme was produced by BBC radio producer Peter Philbeam, who had already overseen several appearances by the group on the show during 1962–63.

The Recording Session

The Beatles arrived at the Playhouse Theatre during the afternoon.

4:00pm – Rehearsals began

8:00pm–8:45pm – Recording session

During the recording, the band performed four songs drawn from their rapidly growing repertoire:

  • I Saw Her Standing There
  • Misery
  • Do You Want To Know A Secret
  • Please Please Me

At the time, BBC sessions were typically recorded quickly with minimal overdubs. The performances captured the raw energy and tight live sound that had been forged during the band’s marathon club residencies in Liverpool and Hamburg.

Broadcast Details

The episode was not aired immediately. Instead, the programme was broadcast several days later:

📻 Broadcast: Tuesday 12th March 1963

📻 Time: 5:00pm

📻 Station: BBC Light Programme

Interestingly, only three of the four songs were included in the broadcast.

“I Saw Her Standing There” was omitted from the final transmission.

The BBC frequently edited performances to fit strict time slots, meaning many recorded songs never made it to air.

The Only Song Officially Released

For decades, these BBC recordings circulated only among collectors. However, one performance from this session eventually received an official release.

The Beatles’ BBC recording of “Misery” from the 6 March 1963 session appeared on:

On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2 (2013)

This release offered fans a rare chance to hear the group performing the song live in the BBC studio environment, showcasing the tight vocal harmonies of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Why This Session Matters in Beatles History

The Here We Go appearance marked the end of The Beatles’ relationship with this particular BBC programme, though their collaboration with the broadcaster was far from over.

Between 1962 and 1965, the band would record over 50 BBC radio sessions, many of which featured exclusive performances not released on their studio albums.

These broadcasts helped:

  • Spread their music across Britain before widespread TV exposure
  • Showcase their live performance skills
  • Introduce listeners to songs not yet available in record shops

In early 1963, radio remained one of the most powerful promotional tools in the UK music industry, and appearances like this played a crucial role in the band’s explosive rise.

A Snapshot of Beatlemania Before It Exploded

When The Beatles stepped into the Manchester Playhouse Theatre on 6th March 1963, Beatlemania had not yet fully taken hold — but it was just around the corner.

Within months:

  • “Please Please Me” would top the charts
  • National television appearances would bring the band into millions of homes
  • Their fanbase would explode across Britain and beyond

This BBC session therefore captures a unique moment — the sound of The Beatles on the brink of becoming the biggest band in the world.
