The Beatles Record BBC Session for Side By Side – 4 April 1963

Thursday 4 April 1963 | Radio, BBC

On 4 April 1963, The Beatles returned to the BBC to record a third session for the radio programme Side By Side, just three days after completing two previous recordings. Such was the growing demand for the band that an additional session was quickly arranged.

Recording at Paris Studio, London

The session took place at the BBC’s Paris Studio in London between 11:00am and 2:00pm. During the recording, The Beatles performed a selection of tracks that reflected both their stage repertoire and current releases.

The setlist included:

  • ‘Too Much Monkey Business’
  • ‘Love Me Do’
  • ‘Boys’
  • ‘I’ll Be On My Way’
  • ‘From Me To You’

A Rare Beatles Recording

Of all the songs recorded during the session, ‘I’ll Be On My Way’ holds particular historical importance. It is the only known recording of the song by The Beatles in existence.

Written by Lennon–McCartney, the track was originally intended for Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, another act managed by Brian Epstein. Their version was recorded at Abbey Road Studios on 14 March 1963 as the B-side to ‘Do You Want To Know A Secret’.

Broadcast and Later Release

This edition of Side By Side was first broadcast on the BBC Light Programme on 24 June 1963. At the time, BBC recordings were rarely archived, making surviving material particularly valuable.

Decades later, The Beatles’ version of ‘I’ll Be On My Way’ was officially released in 1994 on the album Live At The BBC, giving fans a rare glimpse into their early radio performances.

The Beatles and the BBC

The Beatles’ frequent BBC sessions played a vital role in their rise to fame, allowing them to reach a national audience across the UK. These recordings captured the band’s raw energy and versatility during a pivotal moment in their career.

The session on 4 April 1963 stands as a testament to their rapidly growing popularity and the BBC’s eagerness to meet public demand.
