Stuart Sutcliffe is Born β 23 June 1940
On 23 June 1940, at the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland, Stuart Fergusson Victor Sutcliffe came into the world. He would live for just 21 years β but in that time he would become one of the most romantically compelling figures in the entire Beatles story: the original bassist, the art school visionary, the so-called Fifth Beatle, and the young man whose death in Hamburg in April 1962 cast a long shadow over the group's earliest days of fame.
Stuart's father Charles Sutcliffe was a naval officer; his mother Millie was a school teacher. The family moved to Liverpool in 1943, when Stuart was just three years old.
The Art Student Who Became a Beatle
Stuart Sutcliffe enrolled at the Liverpool College of Art, where he quickly distinguished himself as a painter of exceptional talent. It was there that he met John Lennon, a fellow student whose energy and charisma were impossible to ignore. The two became firm friends.
In January 1960, Lennon invited Sutcliffe to join his band β then known as the Silver Beetles β as bassist. Sutcliffe had used the proceeds of a painting sale (reportedly Β£65, won at the John Moores Exhibition) to buy a Hofner President bass. His technique remained rudimentary; he often performed with his back to the audience. None of this mattered to Lennon. Stuart was in the band.
The Beatles' Name: A Tribute to Buddy Holly
Sutcliffe is widely credited with helping shape the group's name. Inspired by Buddy Holly's band The Crickets β whose name played on a double meaning β Sutcliffe and Lennon devised The Beatles: a pun combining "beat" (beat music) with "beetles" (the insect). It was a direct tribute to Holly, whose influence on Lennon was immense.
Hamburg and Astrid Kirchherr
The Beatles made their first trip to Hamburg in August 1960, playing marathon sets on the Reeperbahn. It was there that Stuart met the love of his life: Astrid Kirchherr, a German photographer whose portraits of the group became some of the most iconic early Beatles images ever taken. It was Astrid who introduced the group to their famous mop-top haircut, styling Stuart's hair first.
When the Beatles returned to Liverpool in December 1960, Stuart stayed behind in Hamburg with Astrid, having been accepted to study at the Hamburg College of Art under Eduardo Paolozzi. Paul McCartney took over on bass permanently.
Death in Hamburg β 10 April 1962
Stuart Sutcliffe began suffering severe headaches and episodes of partial blindness. He continued to paint β his work from this period is extraordinary β but his health deteriorated rapidly. On 10 April 1962, he collapsed in Astrid Kirchherr's arms and died of a brain haemorrhage, aged 21. Read the full account: Stuart Sutcliffe Death β 10 April 1962.
The Beatles were on their way back to Hamburg when he died. Lennon's grief was profound β largely suppressed in public, channelled into music and art. The group's Star-Club residency continued: The Beatles at the Star-Club, Hamburg 1962.
Legacy
Stuart Sutcliffe's paintings are now held in collections around the world. His story was told in the 1994 film Backbeat, directed by Iain Softley, with Astrid Kirchherr serving as consultant. He remains one of the most poignant figures in the Beatles' story β the one who got away, the artist who chose painting over pop.
