Filming "A Hard Day's Night": Ringo Starr's Riverside Scene – 9 April 1964
Thursday 9 April 1964 | Film and video
On 9 April 1964, Ringo Starr was the only member of The Beatles involved in filming for A Hard Day's Night, shooting his now-iconic solo sequence along the River Thames in Kew, Surrey.
The scene, often referred to as the “lonely man” sequence, became one of the most memorable and critically praised moments in the film.
The Riverside Scene
Filmed along the Thames towpath and embankment, the sequence features Starr wandering alone, attempting to escape the pressures of fame. Its reflective tone contrasted with the film's otherwise energetic and comedic style.
Despite its emotional depth, Starr later revealed the performance was less method acting and more circumstance.
“I had come directly to work from a nightclub... and was a little hungover, to say the least… I said, ‘Let me just walk around and you film me,’ and that’s what we did. And why I look so cold and dejected is because I felt like s**t. There’s no acting going on; I felt that bad.”

Improvisation and Challenges
Director Richard Lester initially attempted to film the scene with scripted dialogue between Starr and a young boy, played by David Janson. However, due to Starr's condition, multiple approaches were tried before settling on a largely improvised sequence.
The famous moment where Starr kicks and trips over a tyre proved unexpectedly difficult to capture, requiring several attempts before the shot was completed successfully.
In a twist, Janson ultimately rolled the tyre perfectly on his first try when the task was handed over to him.
A Standout Moment in Beatles Cinema
The finished scene became one of the most celebrated parts of A Hard Day's Night, praised for its naturalistic tone and understated performance.
It also marked an early example of Starr's on-screen charisma, reinforcing his reputation as the most naturally gifted actor among The Beatles.
