Recording: And I Love Her, Tell Me Why, If I Fell

Thursday 27th February 1964 – Studio Two, EMI Studios

On Thursday 27th February 1964, The Beatles held two recording sessions in Studio Two at EMI Studios (later Abbey Road), continuing work on songs for the forthcoming film and album A Hard Day's Night.

Producer: George Martin

Engineer: Norman Smith

This was a highly productive day, resulting in the completion of three key Lennon–McCartney compositions.

Morning Session (10:00am–1:00pm)

And I Love Her

After unsuccessful attempts on 25th and 26th February, the group resumed work on And I Love Her.

  • Takes 20 and 21 were recorded.
  • Take 21 became the master.
  • The arrangement featured Paul McCartney on vocal and bass, George Harrison on the distinctive nylon-string acoustic guitar, John Lennon on acoustic rhythm, and Ringo Starr on bongos and claves.
  • The shift to the now-familiar Latin-tinged rhythmic feel had been refined over the previous two days, making this the definitive version.

Tell Me Why

Still in the morning session, The Beatles recorded and completed Tell Me Why in eight takes.

  • A brisk, harmony-driven Lennon composition.
  • Designed for inclusion in performance scenes for the film.
  • The final take was selected as the master.

Afternoon Session (2:30pm–5:30pm)

After a lunch break, the band returned to record If I Fell.

  • 15 takes were recorded.
  • Take 15 became the master.
  • John Lennon and Paul McCartney sang the intricate opening harmonies into a single microphone — a technique frequently used to balance blend and tone naturally.
  • The song's shifting time signature in the introduction required careful coordination, explaining the relatively high number of takes.

Historical Context

  • This session took place:
  • Just two weeks after The Beatles' first US visit (February 1964).
  • During the intensive recording period for A Hard Day's Night.
  • At the height of early Beatlemania.

By late February 1964, The Beatles were working under tight production schedules to complete both a feature film and its accompanying soundtrack LP.
