The Chaos And Creation Connection
While in Lisbon, McCartney sat down with Andrew Slater, chairman of Capitol Records, and played him 15–20 recent demos — eight recorded with Nigel Godrich and others with David Kahne. Slater was immediately struck by the Godrich material:
‘At the time I was struck more by his approach with Nigel. It has all the personality of the early ’70s McCartney records, while still sounding very fresh and modern. It had all his personality as a drummer and all the things we sometimes overlook because Paul is such a great singer and such a great songwriter. He’s equally as great as a musician, and that collection of songs really showed that.’
— Andrew Slater, Capitol Records chairman, Billboard, 3 September 2005
The demos heard in Lisbon became the foundation for Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, released September 2005. Produced entirely by Godrich — best known for his work with Radiohead — and largely self-performed by McCartney, the album was widely regarded as one of his finest solo works and received a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
