The band

Paul McCartney was joined by his long-standing band: Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (guitar and bass guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar), and Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums). The band had been touring together since the Back In The World Tour in 2002 — by 2010, they had been playing together for eight years.

McCartney reflected on the band’s evolution:

The great thing is that we have grown into a band. It’s funny because I always felt we were a bunch of guys playing together and were very lucky because we made a good noise that we found ourselves excited to be in the middle of. Last year I just suddenly said to myself, “Wait a minute, you have been playing with these guys for, like, nine years now.” Whether you like it or not that makes you a band and that is the great thing. That is what happened to us, we have become a band almost without noticing.

The Up And Coming Tour

The Up And Coming Tour ran from March 2010 to June 2011, taking in North America, Europe, South America, and beyond. It was named after McCartney’s 2010 album Electric Arguments (released under the name The Fireman) and his forthcoming solo work. The tour included landmark shows at the Hollywood Bowl, Hampden Park, Millennium Stadium, and stadiums across South America.

Highlights of the broader tour included the Isle of Wight Festival (13 June 2010), Hard Rock Calling in London (27 June 2010), and a series of South American stadium shows in November 2010. The tour concluded in June 2011.
