Paul McCartney Filmed Unused Scene for A Hard Day’s Night – 20 April 1964

Filming: A Hard Day's Night (Unused Paul McCartney Solo Scene)

Monday 20 April 1964 | Film and Video, The Beatles

On 20 April 1964, Paul McCartney filmed a solo sequence for The Beatles' debut feature film A Hard Day's Night. Although fully completed at the time, the scene was ultimately cut and never included in the final release.

The sequence followed McCartney as he searched for Ringo Starr, who is temporarily missing, leading him into a rehearsal space where he encounters a young actress, played by 18-year-old Isla Blair.

The scene was conceived as a stylised, conversational interlude with a lightly theatrical tone, but director Richard Lester later removed it, considering it too slow in pacing and tonally inconsistent with the rest of the film. It also resulted in McCartney being the only Beatle without a solo scene in the finished movie.

Filming took place at the Jack Billings TV School of Dancing at 18 Goldhawk Road, London, above The Bush pub. The shoot was notable for an unexpected crowd of fans outside the building, which created a difficult departure for McCartney and Blair at the end of the day.

According to accounts from Isla Blair, the intensity of the crowd's reaction was physically frightening, and she later declined a repeat offer of transport the following day.

FAQ

Why was the scene cut from A Hard Day's Night?

Director Richard Lester felt it disrupted the film's pacing and did not fit its naturalistic tone. He also considered it inappropriate for a Beatle to have a romantic scene with a girl.

Was this McCartney's only solo scene in the film?

Yes. With the sequence removed, McCartney became the only Beatle without a solo scene in the final cut.

Where was it filmed?

It was filmed above The Bush pub on Goldhawk Road in west London.

Does any footage survive?

No. The out-takes were destroyed by Twickenham Film Studios in 1969, five years after the film's completion, under standard studio retention policies.
