What Happened on 4 July 2012?
The Orange Beach concert was the 16th of 26 dates on the 2012 North American tour, following a show at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater in Alabama the previous day and preceding dates in Atlanta and Nashville. The Wharf Amphitheater is an outdoor venue on the Intracoastal Waterway in Orange Beach, on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, and the Independence Day setting gave the show a festive atmosphere.
The 12th All-Starr Band
The 12th All-Starr Band was one of the most musically cohesive lineups in the history of the touring project, featuring musicians with deep roots in classic rock and strong individual identities as performers. The full band was:
- Ringo Starr — vocals, drums, percussion, keyboards
- Steve Lukather — vocals, guitar
- Gregg Rolie — vocals, organ, keyboards
- Todd Rundgren — vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass, percussion, keyboards
- Richard Page — vocals, bass guitar
- Mark Rivera — vocals, saxophone, percussion, keyboards, guitar
- Warren Ham — vocals, saxophone, harmonica, flute, percussion, keyboards
- Gregg Bissonette — vocals, drums
Steve Lukather is the lead guitarist and a founding member of Toto, the Los Angeles rock group whose 1982 album Toto IV won six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. Toto’s hits ‘Rosanna’, ‘Africa’, and ‘Hold The Line’ all featured in the All-Starr setlist. Lukather is also one of the most prolific session guitarists in recording history, having played on an estimated 1,500 albums, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller (1982) and Beat It.
Gregg Rolie was a founding member of both Santana and Journey. He played organ and sang lead on Santana’s early recordings, including ‘Evil Ways’ and ‘Black Magic Woman’/‘Gypsy Queen’ — all of which featured in the All-Starr setlist. He was also a founding member of Journey, singing lead on their early albums before Steve Perry joined the group. Rolie’s presence in the All-Starr Band gave the lineup a direct connection to two of the most significant bands in classic rock history.
Todd Rundgren returned for his second All-Starr Band tour, having previously appeared with the second All-Starr Band in 1992. His contributions to the 2012 setlist included ‘I Saw The Light’, ‘Bang The Drum All Day’, and ‘Love Is The Answer’.
Richard Page also returned for his second All-Starr tour, having appeared with the 11th All-Starr Band in 2011. His Mr. Mister hits ‘Kyrie’, ‘Broken Wings’, and ‘You Are Mine’ all featured in the setlist.
Mark Rivera and Gregg Bissonette were both All-Starr Band veterans, having appeared on multiple previous tours. Rivera’s multi-instrumental versatility and Bissonette’s drumming provided the backbone of the band’s live sound.
Warren Ham is an American multi-instrumentalist who has been a regular member of the All-Starr Band across numerous tours, providing saxophone, harmonica, flute, and additional vocals.
