On This Day in Beatles History: Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band Live at Rockhal, Esch-sur-Alzette – 4 July 2018
On 4 July 2018, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at the Rockhal in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. It was the 19th show of the 13th All-Starr Band’s 44-date tour of Europe and North America, which ran from June to September 2018. The Luxembourg concert was part of a run of European dates before the tour took a summer break and resumed in the United States in September.
What Happened on 4 July 2018?
The Rockhal — Luxembourg’s national rock music venue — is located in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg’s second-largest city, in the south of the country. The venue opened in 2005 and has established itself as one of the leading concert venues in the Benelux region. The 4 July show followed dates in Bilbao on 1 July and preceded shows in Monte Carlo, Lucca, and Marostica before the European leg concluded in Rome on 11 July.
The 13th All-Starr Band
The 13th All-Starr Band comprised:
- Ringo Starr — vocals, drums, percussion, keyboards
- Steve Lukather — vocals, guitar
- Colin Hay — vocals, guitar, harmonica
- Gregg Rolie — vocals, keyboards
- Graham Gouldman — vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar
- Warren Ham — vocals, saxophone, harmonica, flute, percussion, keyboards
- Gregg Bissonette — vocals, drums, trumpet
Steve Lukather returned for his second All-Starr Band tour, having previously appeared with the 12th All-Starr Band in 2012. His Toto hits ‘Rosanna’ and ‘Hold The Line’ again featured in the setlist.
Colin Hay is the Scottish-born Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist best known as the lead vocalist and co-founder of Men at Work, the Melbourne group whose debut album Business as Usual (1981) reached number one in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Their hits ‘Down Under’ and ‘Who Can It Be Now?’ both featured in the All-Starr setlist. Hay has also had a successful solo career, and his song ‘Overkill’ gained a new generation of listeners through its use in the television series Scrubs. He was born in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland, and emigrated to Australia as a child.
Graham Gouldman is one of the most celebrated songwriters in British pop history. As a member of 10cc — the Manchester group he co-founded with Eric Stewart, Lol Creme, and Kevin Godley — he co-wrote and performed some of the most inventive pop songs of the 1970s, including ‘I’m Not In Love’ (1975), ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ (1978), and ‘The Things We Do For Love’ (1977), all of which featured in the All-Starr setlist. Before forming 10cc, Gouldman had written hits for other artists including ‘For Your Love’ and ‘Heart Full of Soul’ for The Yardbirds, ‘Bus Stop’ and ‘Look Through Any Window’ for The Hollies, and ‘No Milk Today’ for Herman’s Hermits — making him one of the most prolific hit songwriters of the British Invasion era.
Gregg Rolie returned for his second All-Starr Band tour, having appeared with the 12th All-Starr Band in 2012. His Santana contributions — ‘Evil Ways’, ‘Black Magic Woman’/‘Gypsy Queen’, and ‘Oye Cómo Va’ — all featured in the setlist.
Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette were both All-Starr Band veterans, appearing across multiple tours. Bissonette’s additional trumpet playing added a new dimension to his contributions on this tour.
