On This Day in Beatles History: Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band Live at Mölleplatsen, Malmö – 4 July 1992

On 4 July 1992, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band performed at Mölleplatsen in Malmö, Sweden. It was the 23rd show of the second All-Starr Band’s 62-date tour of North America and Europe, which ran from June to September 1992. The Malmö concert was the third of three consecutive Scandinavian dates, following shows in Gothenburg and Hedemora.

What Happened on 4 July 1992?

The Mölleplatsen concert was part of the European leg of the 1992 All-Starr Band tour, which took the group through Sweden, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, and Italy before returning to North America in August. The Malmö show followed the All Star Festival in Gothenburg on 2 July and the Dalarock Festival in Hedemora on 3 July, and preceded the Empire Theatre, Liverpool, on 6 July — a homecoming of sorts for Ringo Starr.

The Second All-Starr Band

The second All-Starr Band was one of the most musically distinguished lineups Ringo Starr assembled during his All-Starr touring career. The full band was:

  • Ringo Starr — vocals, drums, percussion
  • Joe Walsh — vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion
  • Nils Lofgren — vocals, guitar, keyboards, accordion
  • Todd Rundgren — vocals, guitar, keyboards, drums, tambourine
  • Dave Edmunds — vocals, guitar
  • Timothy B Schmit — vocals, bass guitar, guitar
  • Burton Cummings — vocals, keyboards, guitar, tambourine, harmonica, flute
  • Tim Cappello — vocals, saxophone, percussion, keyboards
  • Zak Starkey — drums

Joe Walsh was the guitarist and vocalist of the Eagles, joining the group in 1975 and contributing to their landmark albums Hotel California (1976) and The Long Run (1979). His solo career produced the classic ‘Life’s Been Good’ and ‘Rocky Mountain Way’, both of which featured in the All-Starr setlist. Walsh had also played slide guitar on John Lennon’s ‘How Do You Sleep?’ on the Imagine album in 1971.

Nils Lofgren had been a member of Neil Young’s backing band Crazy Horse and a solo artist before joining Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band in 1984, a position he still holds. His accordion playing was a distinctive feature of the All-Starr shows.

Todd Rundgren was one of the most versatile figures in American rock — a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer whose credits included producing Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell (1977) and XTC’s Skylarking (1986), as well as leading the progressive rock group Utopia. His All-Starr contributions included ‘Bang The Drum All Day’, ‘Hello It’s Me’, and ‘Black Maria’.

Dave Edmunds was a Welsh rock and roll musician and producer whose career spanned rockabilly, pub rock, and new wave. He had previously appeared with Ringo Starr on the first All-Starr Band tour in 1989. His setlist contributions included ‘Girls Talk’ and ‘I Hear You Knocking’.

Timothy B Schmit had been the bass guitarist of Poco before joining the Eagles in 1977, replacing Randy Meisner. He sang lead on the Eagles’ ‘I Can’t Tell You Why’ and ‘Keep On Tryin’’, both of which featured in the All-Starr setlist.

Burton Cummings was the lead vocalist and keyboardist of the Guess Who, the Canadian rock group whose hits included ‘American Woman’ and ‘No Time’ — both performed at the Malmö show. Cummings also had a successful solo career in Canada.

Tim Cappello was a saxophonist and percussionist best known for his appearance in the film The Lost Boys (1987), in which he performed ‘I Still Believe’ in a memorable scene. His ‘Wiggle’ was a regular feature of the All-Starr setlist.

Zak Starkey is Ringo Starr’s son, born in 1965. He had been playing drums professionally since the early 1980s and would go on to become the drummer for The Who from 1996, as well as playing with Oasis. His presence in the All-Starr Band gave the rhythm section an unusual father-and-son dynamic.
