On This Day in Beatles History: Paul McCartney Live at Roskilde Festival – 4 July 2015
On 4 July 2015, Paul McCartney performed at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. It was the 83rd show of the Out There Tour, which ran for 91 dates between May 2013 and October 2015. The 39-song set opened with ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ and included a rare outing for ‘Good Day Sunshine’, which McCartney had not played live since July 2008.
What Happened on 4 July 2015?
The Roskilde Festival performance was one of the headline slots of the 2015 edition of the festival, which is held annually on a site near the town of Roskilde, approximately 30 kilometres west of Copenhagen. Roskilde is one of the oldest and largest music festivals in Europe, founded in 1971, and its headline slots are among the most prestigious in the European festival calendar.
The setlist opened with ‘Magical Mystery Tour’, the title track of The Beatles’ 1967 television film and double EP, which had been added to the Out There Tour setlist as a relatively recent addition. ‘Good Day Sunshine’ — from The Beatles’ 1966 album Revolver — was another notable inclusion, making its first live appearance since July 2008. McCartney’s performance of ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’, also from Revolver, was filmed and shared from the show.
The Band
McCartney’s touring band for the Out There Tour comprised:
- Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens — vocals, keyboards, guitar, percussion, harmonica
- Brian Ray — vocals, guitar, bass
- Rusty Anderson — vocals, guitar
- Abe Laboriel Jr — vocals, drums
Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens has been McCartney’s keyboard player since the 1989–90 World Tour, making him one of the longest-serving members of any McCartney touring band. His versatility across keyboards, guitar, and harmonica makes him one of the most important musicians in McCartney’s live sound.
Brian Ray is an American guitarist and bassist who joined McCartney’s band in 2002. He plays both guitar and bass, allowing McCartney to move freely between instruments during the show. Ray has also worked as a session musician and solo artist.
Rusty Anderson is an American guitarist who also joined McCartney’s band in 2002. His fluid, melodic guitar style is a defining element of McCartney’s live sound, and he has co-written songs with McCartney for his solo albums.
Abe Laboriel Jr is an American drummer who joined McCartney’s band in 2001. The son of the celebrated session bassist Abraham Laboriel, he is widely regarded as one of the finest rock drummers of his generation and has been a cornerstone of McCartney’s live performances for more than two decades.
