On This Day in Beatles History: 'Let It Be' Released in the United States – 11 March 1970

On Wednesday 11 March 1970, The Beatles released the single 'Let It Be' in the United States. Issued by Apple Records with the catalogue number Apple 2764, the single was released in stereo only.

The record featured 'You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)' as its b-side, the same pairing used for the UK single.

The release came during a turbulent period in the band's history, only weeks before the official announcement of The Beatles' breakup in April 1970. Behind the scenes, the Let It Be album tapes had been handed to producer Phil Spector, whose controversial orchestral additions — particularly to 'The Long and Winding Road' — would spark a furious protest from Paul McCartney.

The final Beatles singles

'Let It Be' became the penultimate US single released by The Beatles. Just two months later, in May 1970, the band's final American single would appear: 'The Long And Winding Road' / 'For You Blue' — the very track at the centre of the Spector controversy. That release coincided with the worldwide release of the Let It Be album, which marked the final studio album issued by the group.

Chart success

Despite the growing tensions within the band at the time of its release, 'Let It Be' became one of The Beatles' most successful late-period singles, spending 14 weeks on the US charts.

  • No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks
  • No. 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart for four weeks
  • No. 1 in Australia, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland

The song 'Let It Be'

Written primarily by Paul McCartney, 'Let It Be' became one of the most enduring songs in The Beatles' catalogue. Inspired by a dream McCartney had about his mother, Mary McCartney, the song carries a message of comfort and reassurance. The track was recorded during the 1969 Get Back sessions, which were later developed into the Let It Be album and documentary film.
