On This Day in Beatles History: The Beatles Live at the Cavern Club – 9 March 1962
On Friday 9th March 1962, The Beatles returned to the Cavern Club on Mathew Street in Liverpool for another of their famous lunchtime performances. The show marked the band’s 92nd lunchtime appearance at the venue and their 149th known performance overall at the Cavern, including evening engagements.
By early 1962, the Cavern Club had become one of the most important venues in The Beatles’ career. Regular appearances there helped the band build a loyal Liverpool following and refine the energetic stage style that would later captivate audiences across Britain and the world.
The Beatles’ famous Cavern Club lunchtime sessions
During the early 1960s, the Cavern Club hosted a popular series of lunchtime concerts, typically running between 12pm and 2pm. These performances attracted large crowds of local fans who would pack into the small underground cellar to watch the city’s leading Merseybeat groups.
For The Beatles, these lunchtime shows became a central part of their weekly routine. By the time of the 9 March 1962 performance, the band had already played the venue many times, often performing both a lunchtime set and an evening show on the same day.
The appearance on this date was particularly notable because it was the 22nd occasion on which The Beatles performed both lunchtime and evening shows at the Cavern Club.
The Cavern Club and the rise of the Merseybeat scene
Located on Mathew Street in Liverpool city centre, the Cavern Club was originally opened as a jazz venue in 1957. By the early 1960s it had become the centre of the city’s rapidly growing Merseybeat music scene, hosting dozens of local bands and attracting music fans from across the region.
The Beatles’ regular appearances there helped transform the venue into one of the most famous clubs in popular music history. Although the exact number of Cavern performances can never be known with absolute certainty, historical records show that the band played at least 155 lunchtime shows and 125 evening shows at the club between 9 February 1961 and 3 August 1963.
These hundreds of performances were crucial in shaping the band’s musical identity. The long hours on stage helped develop their tight musicianship, humour and stage presence, all of which would become hallmarks of their later success.
Liverpool in 1962: The Beatles before Beatlemania
When The Beatles performed at the Cavern Club on 9 March 1962, they were still primarily a Liverpool club band. Although they had already gained attention in their hometown and during their residencies in Hamburg, national fame was still months away.
Later that year, several major events would transform their career:
- Ringo Starr joining the band in August 1962
- recording sessions at EMI Studios in London
- the release of their debut single “Love Me Do”
These developments would soon propel the group from local popularity to national recognition.
But in early 1962, shows like this lunchtime performance at the Cavern remained the backbone of their career.
