On 5 November 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were photographed at their Tittenhurst Park home near Ascot. One image showed them sitting on the grass in front of the damaged Austin Maxi involved in their Scottish car accident earlier that year.

Lennon had shaved off his beard, prompting a brief explanation to reporters. The day also included filming by Neil Aspinall for the promotional clip accompanying The Beatles’ Something, connecting the couple’s home life with the group’s latest record.

The couple had moved into Tittenhurst Park on 11 August 1969. By the November photo session, the house and grounds had become the setting for both private life and public images of the musicians.

The estate also had a place in The Beatles’ visual history. Their final group photographic session took place there on 22 August 1969. The November photographs were a separate occasion centred on Lennon and Ono.

Tittenhurst was a large country house on London Road, close to Ascot. Historic England identifies the building as an early eighteenth-century house, refaced around 1830, and lists it at Grade II. Its grounds supplied a very different backdrop from a recording studio or a concert stage.

The image shows the couple seated close together on the grass, with the car immediately behind them. The damaged bonnet and front bodywork dominate the background, and one front door stands open.

The Maxi had been involved in an accident in Scotland on 1 July 1969. Lennon was travelling with Ono, his son Julian and her daughter Kyoko when the car left the road in Sutherland. Lennon and Ono required hospital treatment.

The damaged vehicle was subsequently brought south to Tittenhurst. Lennon instructed his chauffeur, Les Anthony, to retrieve it from Scotland. The dated account describes Lennon asking for it to be crushed, after which Ono decided to make an art piece from the wreckage on the lawn.

The November photograph therefore brought an object from the summer’s accident into the grounds of their new home. The car’s return to the estate and the later photo session were separate from the accident itself.

Lennon explains his clean-shaven appearance

Lennon’s appearance had changed since the bearded photographs associated with much of 1969. He explained the decision to shave in practical terms:

“I must admit I was getting a bit fed up with it. It feels good to see my chin again and get some fresh air on my face.”

The remark supplies a straightforward contemporary explanation for the change. His long hair remained, but the beard familiar from the Abbey Road period had gone.

Neil Aspinall films their contribution to Something

Neil Aspinall also filmed Lennon and Ono at Tittenhurst on 5 November. The material was intended for the promotional clip for Something, George Harrison’s song from Abbey Road.

The film presented the four Beatles with their wives in separate domestic settings. The official Beatles account identifies John and Yoko at Tittenhurst, Paul and Linda at their Scottish farm, George and Pattie at Kinfauns in Esher, and Ringo and Maureen at Brookfield in Elstead.

This was not a performance by the four musicians together at Tittenhurst. Individual sequences from the different homes were assembled into a promotional film for the record.

The locations and the finished clip can be explored on The Beatles’ official Something page. The Tittenhurst contribution places Lennon and Ono’s November day within the visual promotion of Abbey Road.

Something and the Abbey Road connection

Something was written by George Harrison and appeared on Abbey Road. Its promotional film used images of the musicians with their partners rather than a conventional group performance.

The song’s recording history had unfolded months before the Tittenhurst filming. Our article on the 16 April 1969 session follows an earlier stage of its development alongside Old Brown Shoe.

The November footage was a later promotional activity, not another recording session for the song. It brought a finished record into a new visual setting at the musicians’ homes.

Tittenhurst in Lennon and Ono’s later work

The house would become closely associated with Lennon’s Imagine period. The BBC’s account of his time at the estate highlights the familiar image of him singing at a white piano and the recording and filming work undertaken there.

Those later associations should be kept in chronological order. On 5 November 1969, the immediate activities were photographs of the couple and filming for a Beatles promotional clip. The estate’s better-known Imagine imagery belongs to the following phase of Lennon and Ono’s work.

The move-in article provides the broader Tittenhurst Park timeline, from their arrival through the house’s later recording history.
