Cape Town, South Africa → New York, USA
On Wednesday 28 May 1980, John Lennon left Cape Town and boarded a flight back to New York. Due to the journey time, he arrived on 29 May. It was the end of a brief and largely private holiday in South Africa — one of the more unexpected entries in the final chapter of Lennon’s life.
The South Africa Holiday
Lennon had arrived in South Africa on 23 May 1980 for a short holiday. He stayed in Cape Town at the Mount Nelson Hotel — one of the city’s most celebrated grand hotels, a Victorian-era institution set in gardens at the foot of Table Mountain — travelling under the alias Mr J Green, a pseudonym he used to maintain privacy while travelling.
The visit was characteristically low-key. By 1980, Lennon had been living as a virtual recluse in the Dakota Building in New York for several years, largely withdrawn from public life and devoted to raising his son Sean, who had been born in October 1975. The South Africa trip was one of a series of travels Lennon undertook in the first half of 1980 as he began to re-engage with the world — a period that would culminate in the recording of Double Fantasy later that year.
The Final Year
May 1980 fell in the middle of what would prove to be the last year of Lennon’s life. He had spent much of the late 1970s in what he described as his “househusband” period — baking bread, caring for Sean, and stepping back from the music industry that had defined his adult life. By early 1980, something had shifted. He was sailing, travelling, and beginning to write again.
In August 1980, Lennon and Yoko Ono began recording Double Fantasy at the Hit Factory in New York. The album was released on 17 November 1980. On 8 December 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed outside the Dakota Building. He was 40 years old.
The Cape Town holiday of May 1980 — quiet, private, conducted under a false name in a grand hotel at the foot of Table Mountain — is one of the last glimpses of Lennon simply living, before the final creative burst that ended in tragedy.
