5 November 1971 · John Lennon and Yoko Ono · Interview · New York City

On Friday 5 November 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono welcomed journalist Don Singleton to their rented apartment at 105 Bank Street in Greenwich Village, New York City. Singleton was interviewing them for the New York Daily News. The visit extended beyond their home: the couple later took him to dinner, then attended a party hosted by art dealer Reese Palley.

The resulting newspaper feature appeared later in November. The interview, its accompanying portrait session and the beginning of publication fell on three separate dates: 5, 21 and 22 November respectively.

Don Singleton visits John and Yoko in Greenwich Village

Singleton interviewed John and Yoko at their Bank Street home. The couple were establishing their life in New York, and Greenwich Village became an important location in their early American years.

Lennon’s connection with the city already included work on Imagine. Earlier in 1971 he had recorded at the Record Plant, an episode covered in our article on the New York Imagine sessions of 4 July 1971.

Dinner and a party after the interview

After the conversation at Bank Street, Lennon and Ono invited Singleton to join them for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. The three then attended a party hosted by Reese Palley, an art dealer.

The photographs followed on 21 November

Tom Monaster photographed Lennon and Ono at 105 Bank Street on 21 November, more than two weeks after Singleton’s interview. These were photographs made for the same newspaper feature, but the portrait session was a separate visit.

The Daily News feature begins on 22 November

The feature ran in the New York Daily News over three days beginning on 22 November 1971. Its first appearance therefore came after both the interview and the portrait session.
