George and Pattie Harrison return from America – 9 August 1967

Wednesday 9 August 1967 | New York to London

On 9 August 1967, George Harrison, his wife Pattie Harrison, Neil Aspinall (The Beatles’ road manager and close confidant) and Alexis ‘Magic Alex’ Mardas returned to England after a week’s break on the West Coast of the United States. They flew back to London via New York.

The West Coast Visit

During their time in the United States, the Harrisons spent time with Ravi Shankar and other Indian musicians — a reflection of George’s deepening commitment to Indian classical music and spirituality that had been growing since 1966. They also spent time with Derek Taylor, The Beatles’ former publicist who was then working in Los Angeles, and with Jenny Boyd, Pattie’s sister.

The visit took place during the Summer of Love, and the West Coast — particularly San Francisco and Los Angeles — was at the epicentre of the counterculture movement that The Beatles had helped inspire. George had famously walked through Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco earlier that summer, on 7 August 1967, an experience that left him disillusioned with the hippie scene he encountered there.

The group returned to England just days before The Beatles would gather to hear the news of Brian Epstein’s death on 27 August 1967 — an event that would profoundly alter the course of the band’s history.
