Geoff Britton Auditions For Wings – 13 May 1974
Monday 13 May 1974
On 13 May 1974, drummer Geoff Britton took part in a crucial final audition with Wings as Paul McCartney continued rebuilding the group following a major line-up shake-up.
The session took place at London's famous Electric Ballroom, where Britton rehearsed a selection of songs with the band as McCartney assessed both his musicianship and personality fit.
Searching For A New Wings Drummer
The auditions came after the departure of drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Henry McCullough in 1973.
Determined to strengthen Wings for a new era, McCartney launched an extensive search for a replacement drummer.
An astonishing 52 drummers auditioned across two days on 29 and 30 April 1974. From that large group, only five players were invited back for additional sessions held on 8 and 9 May.
The Final Two Candidates
By mid-May, the search had narrowed to two finalists:
- Geoff Britton
- Rob Townshend
Britton's final audition at the Electric Ballroom was designed to test more than technical ability.
Alongside rehearsing songs with Wings, the band also joined him for lunch at a nearby restaurant — an intentional move by McCartney to see how comfortably the drummer interacted socially with the group away from rehearsals.
Winning The Job
The relaxed but carefully considered audition process ultimately worked in Britton's favour.
On 16 May 1974, McCartney personally telephoned Geoff Britton to confirm that he had secured the position, officially completing what became known as the second major line-up of Wings.
The refreshed group would soon begin work on the ambitious Venus and Mars era, helping transform Wings into one of the world's biggest touring bands during the mid-1970s.
Wings Mark II
The new-look Wings line-up consisted of:
- Paul McCartney
- Linda McCartney
- Denny Laine
- Jimmy McCulloch
- Geoff Britton
Although Britton's time in Wings would prove relatively short-lived, his arrival marked an important transitional moment in the band's evolution.
