Filming: A Hard Day’s Night – Les Ambassadeurs

Friday 17 April 1964 | Film and video

This was the second and final day of filming at the exclusive London private members’ club Les Ambassadeurs, following an earlier shoot on 17 March 1964.

On this day, The Beatles filmed the dancing sequences in the club’s Garrison Room. The scenes were set to the songs I Wanna Be Your Man and Don’t Bother Me, both featured in the film’s energetic club sequence.

During a break in filming, The Beatles also gave a short interview to US television host Ed Sullivan in the club’s walled garden. The interview lasted one minute and 34 seconds and was later broadcast on 24 May 1964 as part of The Ed Sullivan Show.

The broadcast also included footage of The Beatles miming to You Can’t Do That, which had been filmed earlier at London’s Scala Theatre. Although intended for inclusion in A Hard Day’s Night, the performance was ultimately omitted from the final cut.
