Around The Beatles Recording Session 1964 – IBC Studios London Rehearsals

Recording: Around The Beatles

Saturday 18 April 1964 | Television, The Beatles

On 18 April 1964, The Beatles began rehearsal and recording work for the ITV television special Around The Beatles, produced for Rediffusion. The programme was a one-hour studio spectacular conceived and overseen by producer Jack Good.

Filming for the special would ultimately take place on 28 April 1964, but this earlier date marked the start of the production’s audio recording phase at IBC Studios in Portland Place, London.

The working title of the programme was John, Paul, George And Ringo, reflecting its focus on The Beatles as individual personalities. The production also featured guest appearances from PJ Proby, the Vernons Girls, Long John Baldry, Millie, The Jets, Cilla Black, and Sounds Incorporated.

As part of the wider production schedule, The Beatles were contractually required to attend multiple rehearsal sessions. However, due to their intense touring and recording commitments, their availability was limited. Audio work for the programme was recorded across two consecutive days beginning on this date.

The session concluded at approximately 10pm. Following completion of The Beatles’ recording work, studio preparations continued for PJ Proby’s recording of Hold Me, which was produced by Jack Good and would go on to become a key moment in Proby’s UK breakthrough.
